I'd want a couple of dozen for the newborn period--they poop a lot. I've got 18 pockets and about a dozen prefolds, but mine's nearly 10 months.

I'd actually consider going for Kissaluv fitteds or infant prefolds for newborns--they grow out of the first size really fast, and Fuzzi Bunz are expensive (although they have great resale value).
