I took the Aristocrats off the chairs where they were drying and they didn't feel completely lanolinised (I've only done it a couple of times; I'm still not perfect with it, especially since I'm using melted Lansinoh) so I figured I might as well wash them and see. They're still purple. I guess that the water was hot/acidic enough to make it set. (I do have a habit of having the water a little hotter than I should--too impatient to cool it and risk the lanolin lumping up, although I've never felted anything, phew--so that probably did it.
Just checked Dharma Trading's dyes--acid dyes do require hot water to set. (I know a little bit about dyeing from all the threads on TBW about dying the natural linen/hemp wraps, but of course being plant fibres, the dyeing procedure is totally different.)
