My grandma told me the following story yesterday:
One evening when she was pregnant with my mother, my grandma really wanted some ice cream. Unfortunately, there was a huge snowstorm, and my grandfather didn't want to go out. They were living in Sea Gate with my great-grandparents at the time, and the ice cream parlor was quite a walk. My great-grandfather heard, and said, "Danny, you can't say no to a pregnant woman, you have to go." (I think this is some Jewish belief--if a pregnant woman wants some kind of food, you have to give it to her.) So my grandfather got his boots and coat and went out.
He came back with the ice cream, and my grandma says, "I don't want it any more". My grandfather had this look on his face, so Grandma says, "Oh, I'll have some."
She took 2 bites and threw up all over the bed. :)

It's reasonably common even with gentiles - the idea is that your body craves what the baby needs.
