Zoe was really very funny when we first moved in. She explored everything.

Then she discovered the windows... and decided she wanted out. I turned around one afternoon and saw her walking across the ledge outside the window! Freaked me out.

She tried it again in the bedroom, which was even worse because the ledge there is very narrow.

Luckily, she seems to have stopped trying. She is a bit more active than she was at the old flat; I think she likes having the room to explore. She's also been very cute and obedient lately; she comes up on the bed/sofa when I call her!

The film Children of Men looks interesting, so I decided to read the original novel, by P.D. James. It's a good book and very well written, but it wasn't the best choice. Part of me was surprised at just how much I was affected by the idea of a world with no children in it.

Funnily enough, I then read this article about declining birthrates in Italy--a quarter of Italian women have no children, and a quarter have only one. It made me sad, and depressed. I can understand individuals who don't want kids, but this is way beyond that; it's a whole social issue. I remember from another article that many Italians only have 1 child because they think it's only worth it if you can give them absolutely everything, and that's what they mean by "can't afford it" (I've noticed that this reason is very rarely used by actual poor people). I can understand the desire, to a point, but the fact is that being a happy, successful, well-adjusted person is not about how much your parents are able to lavish on you.

Called AppleCare, got slightly but not very bitchy (refused to accept "in repair" as an answer). Supposedly, it's in final tests, and they'll call me within the next 2 days with a full update and information on when I'll get it back.
