Street View fun

Google Street View UK launched yesterday. I'm pleased to say our old car has been Street-Viewed. I got a bit nostalgic.

shoot.

My laptop will only work off AC power. The tech said it was the battery and replaced it, but still having the same problem. I'll deal. It's usable.

damn, these neighbors are dumb

There's an unsecured wireless network from one of our neighbors. They have changed NONE of the out of the box settings. I just logged in to their router config. I'm tempted to change the wireless network ID....

That's better.

Found a theme to make Firefox 3 look like Firefox 2. It's not perfect, but at least it's back to light grey. (the reason I don't just go back to Firefox 2 is that it had a bad problem with locking up and requiring a Force Quit--I was never able to work out why, and I tried disabling extensions etc--and I'm hoping 3 will fix that.)

Bleh, new firefox (and new shoes)

1) Do not like new OS-integrated look.

2) Auto-complete in the address bar is now weird. It doesn't order the entries by frequency of use. (At least, it's not doing it with my old history entries--things seem to be improved a little with the ones I've just entered. Interesting--just told it not to save my history, quit and restarted, and it didn't wipe all the entries. This is mostly good because Aliza has accidentally wiped it more than once [cmd-, is preferences, easy for her to hit] but odd. I had to do a "clear private data" to wipe it to see if that helped.)

3) Aliza's Robeez are looking pretty shabby so I got her new ones. She doesn't have much room left in 12-18 months so I got 18-24. They are HUGE. No way can she wear them, not for ages. I'll keep them because she will grow into them (and they really are best for indoors or playing on soft surfaces) but she'll have to stay in her old ones for a while. Hopefully the current ones will last.

holy cow memory is cheap

out of curiosity I went to see how much another gig of RAM would cost. (was reading about Spore--seems EA is developing a Mac version along with the PC version, instead of sending it out to Aspyr for a crappy port 6 months later.)

Ran Crucial's scanner and... 1GB of RAM is £12.99! I remember when I bought a gig for my PowerBook it was closer to £50. At this price it's practically pocket change.

Calling all geek shoppers!

I want to replace my laptop bag. What I want is a Brenthaven backpack (I need the Pro 15/17). They cost £129 new, which is a little steep. None for sale on eBay (the Expandable Trek is only for up to 15.4" laptops)

Anyone know anywhere else I might get a deal?

Still here

We went out for my BIL's 40th yesterday. Aliza was well behaved and ate all her fish and chips, plus some of her grandad's creme brulee and the biscuit that came with it!

Worked out the Semagic problem (or at least, a better diagnosis): If you log in with it, then switch accounts, the 2nd account can't use it. You have to reboot Windows instead. I have no idea why this is.

Want my laptop now kthxbai. Aliza does NOT like me sitting at the PC.

Silly me

I went out today and forgot my wallet (I screwed up when transferring things between bags--came home and found it on the sofa!) I discovered this when I went to get the Guardian at the newsagent's. Doh. Luckily I was mainly headed in to meet Neil before he went to see Iron Man, so it wasn't too bad... though I did go into the Gap (thinking "oh, I'll see if they have that outfit Brent Cross didn't have in her size yesterday"), got into the lift, and then remembered--no wallet.

Off topic: Semagic doesn't work properly on my account on Neil's PC. It starts logging in, hangs on "Sent 262 bytes..." and then tells me "cannot contact server". It works perfectly on his account. I think there's something weird with the install anyway as it only has one saved set of prefs and settings for all users.

Arse!

I forgot to put my laptop away properly when I went into the kitchen. Aliza removed 5 keys. The A is permanently broken.

That will be an impromptu trip to Brent Cross tonight then. Ironically I needed to go there today (but I can't take my laptop there myself--I tried it once and I can't manage laptop bag + diaper bag + stroller). Meh.

end of laptop saga and more bratty child

Of course, after I made an appointment with Apple, it started working again. Luckily it stopped working, and I went. It was the power cord. When I was there I compared mine to one of theirs--it was as I'd suspected. Bent pin inside the connector.

Meanwhile, missy here has been in a foul mood today. First, she had a nice tantrum. I put her down, she puts her arms out to be picked up and whines. I pick her up, she flails and screams. Finally she fell asleep for a bit. After she woke up, she just had fits whenever I attempted to stop her playing with my laptop, the phone, and various other items.

She's now calmed down a bit and is using various pieces of furniture as a brace (she's trying to pull herself up). She's also trashed yesterday's Independent.

Of course - knew it!

Battery/power cable is being flaky again (running off AC but not charging). WTF?

This is going to be a saga, isn't it...

The solution is clearly to keep booking Apple Store appointments, because I did that and it worked again ;)

(ETA: Did it. Hon, since you're in bed I'll tell you now: 19:40 on Tuesday ;) I can't handle laptop + diaper bag + stroller, sorry!)

(ha ha! Now working irregularly. Was charging, then took it out and put it back in to see if I could get the light back to orange, and it stopped working again. I think *hope, pray* it's just the power pack and it probably will need to be replaced at some point.)

Yay!

At some point, my Mac developed a problem: I couldn't connect to Neil's PC over the home network. No file sharing or printing. Googling suggested that this was a Samba issue, known and unfixed.

When I upgraded to Leopard, i had the same problem. Until yesterday, when I noticed that Neil's PC was showing up in the sidebar. I tried adding his printer again, and it all works! I'm happy.

I have no idea why it stopped working (it worked perfectly for ages, then I started having problems--either I couldn't see his PC at all or if I could, I'd get SMB errors) nor why it started working again, but I'm glad it is!

Well that's odd (but nice)

My laptop is working perfectly now. No idea what happened. The light did go back to orange last night, the battery charged and the power cord light is back to green.

At least I don't have to try explaining it to Apple ;)

We went out for lunch today with Neil's sister and her other half. Good fun though Aliza grabbed everything in sight, including the chili sauce.

Really awful, depressing story on MDC (not wackjob this time). One of the women there had breast cancer a little less than 2 years ago. This year her sister died of it. She had her 2nd child at the end of August. A few weeks ago, they found her cancer had come back. It's spread to her stomach, neck, and brain. It's going to kill her, and it won't be long. She's my age.

Bizarre!

now the light on the power cord has gone back on (stuck on green though) and the menu bar indicator says it's charging. I have an appokntment at Apple tomorrow... won't cancel it yet but I'll keep an eye on it.

Oh, FFS, not AGAIN.

I'm having the damn battery/power cord issue (runs off AC power but does not charge, power cord light doesn't work). I strongly suspect this is because I can't keep Aliza away from the cord. *sigh* What am I going to do?? I can't keep going to Apple and asking for replacements.

Leopard is installed.

It all went fairly smoothly aside from some difficulty with my old mail--the new version uses a different mailbox format, and didn't seem to realise my mailboxes were there. It was solved by deleting all the preferences and leaving nothing but the mailboxes folder in--then when I restarted Mail, it imported them all correctly.

I'm not entirely sure on the interface changes: the menu bar is now semitransparent and I find it a little annoying. We'll see though, maybe I'll get used to it.

I know, exciting. I'm a saddo geek.

What the hell, BT?

We're supposed to have an 8Mbit connection. It normally syncs at around 7600Kbit. (~500K down, by the way.)

I was wondering why things were so slow--I;'d be downloading at only 50K/sec, but the Internet would be unusable otherwise. I just checked the router status. We're at, get this, 832/128!!! We do NOT pay £30 a month to get speeds that low.

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting, but same thing. I'll try rebooting the router next. If that doesn't work, Neil will be on the phone to Bangalore when he gets home.

ETA: Phew, unplugging and rebooting it did the trick. I briefly wondered if we'd been capped, but I haven't been doing much downloading lately. Crisis averted. :)
