Amongst the 1,000 xenophobic comments were people who actually said citizenship should only be available to people of "European Christian heritage". I was ready to puke.
I've just read the BBC article, that says that "This would include charity work, involvement in the local community and letters from referees". On these terms, most immigrants would be better citizens than most of the people in the country already (myself included!). I personally don't have a problem with people coming in - but I do think we're overcrowded. But I think a better solution would be to chuck out the British layabouts who are already here. Not sure what you'd do with them because no-one else would want them.
