dear lord

I just googled a particular genetic disorder. I wasn't expecting anything lurid. Google image results at the top turned up something I did NOT want to see, and I'm no stranger to medical gore or rotten.com.

I won't describe it. I will tell you that what I googled was the alternate name for trisomy 13. I strongly recommend that you NOT google this (NB: trisomy 13 does not turn up the same results) unless 1) you have image results turned off or 2) your idea of a good website is rotten.com.

no, no -- don't look in there. you really don't want to see it. don't look.

i may be getting a psych degree, but you already have your in reverse psychology :-)

I take it you ignored my advice? ;-)

Meh, seen it all before when I was investigating the various trisomies and other genetic abnormalities.

I've looked these things up before, but not since Google automatically included the image results... so I wasn't expecting it.

Should I worried that my response was "I've seen worse" I've seen some freakyass pictures over the years, mainly to do with my degree.

I'm just intrigued as to why you were googling it in the first place!

[identity profile] arosoff.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
It was mentioned in an article I was reading and I couldn't quite remember what it was (I knew vaguely but I thought I might be confusing it with another genetic disorder)

I haven't looked this time, but I have a sneaking suspicion I know what you're talking about because I saw it myself when I was trying to work out if we'd have the triple test.

Hmmmm.

Most gross image I've ever seen is the one where someone has photoshopped the mouths of Lampreys onto someone's finger (http://www.snopes.com/photos/gruesome/fingers.asp). That made my fingers feel pretty awful for a few days.

Second to that would be Ichthyosis Foetalis, or Harlequin babies.. Pretty grim, but I think people with that have a reasonable chance of survival.

From the description of Trisomy 13.. yeah, I might pass on that.

eh, the lampreys is an obvious photoshop :-)

I remember the harlequin baby... they can survive now but mortality is high.

Even thought I instinctively knew this one was fake, it gave me the jibblies:

I confess that I couldn't resist sneaking a look.

I'm not sure whether to be horrified or relieved that I thought 'Is that *it*?'.

I'm assuming that I saw the picture I was meant to see.

[identity profile] arosoff.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If there was only 1 eye involved, then yes.

[identity profile] kyte.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the one.

I guess it doesn't push my particular 'buttons' :-)

Sad sad sad..

[identity profile] arosoff.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah - I'm certainly not putting down the condition, which is awful. It's just that I wasn't expecting that particular image at the top of my screen.

Is that Harlequin syndrome? I've got a pretty strong constitution for gore, but that is just... it shakes you to the bones...

[identity profile] arosoff.livejournal.com 2007-09-08 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, Patau syndrome. Causes all sorts of birth defects.
