Carly is worryingly obsessed with Blue's Clues, in particular the mail song. Every evening she watches Blue's Clues with Aliza, and every day she yells "MAIL SONG!!" and sings along with it very loudly.

Today I had to get meat for Rosh Hashana. The butcher's in Jericho didn't have a shoulder veal roast and was rude to boot. So I had to shlep all the way to Great Neck (there are so few kosher butchers these days--it's awful. I know some of the big kosher supermarkets do have decent butcher counters now, but I still prefer an old style butcher). I wasn't entirely sorry I did because they were very nice--I didn't see the right roast straight away and when I asked he pointed and added "but if you need bigger I can cut for you". Which I did, so that was good that I didn't have to ask again. And no trouble getting pullets (soup chickens) from the back either.

The store was filled with gossiping Iranian women (lots of Persians in Great Neck), but otherwise, it was fine. One was very curious about what you did with a veal roast and asked. I felt like such an Ashkenazi when I told her because there was garlic, onion, and paprika involved!

Tomorrow I have to get fish. The regular place where my mom goes said they'd have it in, but didn't take a specific order, so I'm nervous they won't have it. If they don't I'll have to shlep AGAIN to Cedarhurst because I know the kosher markets there sell it. (I need whitefish and pike, ground, with the heads and bones; not a non-Jewish thing.)

I'm making the fish tomorrow, which is really a bit earlier than I should, but I'm busy with other things Sunday (not cooking). My mother won't touch gefilte fish so it's my job. My grandmother is shocked that I'm using a food processor. I pointed out that it chops the same way as her hockmesser (sharp blade cuts into mixture), and doesn't take 30 minutes. Neil is going to get the brake lights on the car fixed because he doesn't want to smell it. Unfortunately, he's going too early so chances are he'll smell some of it anyway! (it cooks for 3 hours).

My mother is already moaning about how crowded everything will be Sunday and Monday, which means I'll be dispatched to suffer the crowds and get fresh challah and cakes. I have marginally more patience for this than she does.
