Some guy wants to build a privately financed 16 mile tunnel from Oyster Bay to Rye. It would open in 2025.
I'm sorry, that was the sound of me collapsing in hysterics.
If Robert Moses couldn't build the bridge to Rye, this guy is not gonna do it! (Even if it's a tunnel, instead.) Everyone likes the idea of not driving through the city. In theory. But the people in Oyster Bay are a lot more interested in NOT having the bridge near their houses. (Admittedly, this plan tries to solve the problem by tunnelling all the way from the LIE. But the mayor of Rye is against it.)
My entire life, people have been proposing the "bridge to Westchester"/"bridge to Connecticut". It has never happened. It will never happen. The power of the North Shore NIMBYs has been unbroken since Robert Moses proposed the Northern Parkway. He managed to get the LIE a little closer to the country clubs, but that's it!
(History, if any LI'ers are reading: http://www.nycroads.com/crossings/oysterbay-rye/)
