This week's Ask the AV Club had a question that stumped the staff, about a children's book. I recognised it instantly (The Missing Persons League, Frank Bonham) and what's weirder, I remembered details that the questioner (and some of the commenters) had got wrong. I haven't read the book in nearly 20 years, but I remember it perfectly. Weird.

from a forum I'm on:

"I just got a cranky yet hilarious e-mail from a friend of mine. Before Christmas, her MIL asked her what she wanted. Friend said that there wasn't really anything she wanted and it wasn't necessary to get her anything; she just liked watching her two boys enjoy the day. MIL said, "Well, how about a nice weekend away? Would you guys like that?" Friend, of course, was like, yeah, sure.

MIL reserved them a spot at a Catholic weekend encounter for troubled marriages."
