This week's New Yorker refers to the "hundred metre dash": http://www.newyorker.com/talk/2007/08/20/070820ta_talk_angell

I've never seen the spelling "metre" used in American English. I'm really puzzled.

While we're at it, there's a quirk of the Independent's that REALLY annoys me. When referring to French leaders, it uses French titles: M. Sarkozy, Mme. Royal, etc--but, Mrs. Merkel (not Frau), Mr. Prodi (not Signor), etc. It makes no sense and comes off as pointlessly affected.

I really seem to be a klutz today...

First, laundry. I need to strip some of my pocket diapers. The trouble with pocket diapers is that the polyester fleece is prone to build-up and you have to be very careful with laundering it. I accidentally put tea tree oil in with the pockets (it's a great idea with prefolds as it's antibacterial, but a bad idea on fleece). (The dropper on that bottle sucks, by the way--I put too much in, and it took about 10 washes before my laundry all stopped smelling of it.) Anyhoo, stripping involves washing your diapers with nothing but a squirt of plain dish liquid, then rinsing and rinsing until there's no more suds. You have to be careful using Fairy liquid in your washing machine, because it suds like hell. This is doubly true with a European front loader. Well, you can guess what I did--a little too forceful with the bottle. Suds hell. I'm going to be running wash cycles all night now, and I already had quite a bit of laundry lined up!

Second, I was incapable of getting Aliza into a perfectly simple cross carry today--something I do almost daily. After about 5 attempts I gave up and put her in the stroller (I didn't want to use the stroller because we were going to the post office, which is very narrow).

Good thing dinner tonight is leftovers, methinks... (Neil's playing bridge)

Their page on Fairy Liquid is sexism straight from 1960:

"Fairy Liquid, the brand trusted by millions of women in the UK, comes in different scents to give you a pleasurable experience while you do your washing up."

because men never do the washing up. GAH.

I'm a devotee of Fairy but that may send me into the welcoming arms of Persil.
