Postscript to Friday: Neil went back down to see the police, they had to leave again and basically they're not interested in a fender bender (as I already knew, but the woman insisted).

Today we woke up a bit later than planned and set off for some sightseeing.

DC Metro was built in the '70s. This means 2 things:

1) All the stations are built in a Brutalist concrete style.
2) All the stations are fully accessible with lifts to the station halls and platforms. It's very baby friendly!

We headed off to the Smithsonian, walked down the Mall, and spent a few hours doing the Air and Space Museum. I told Neil he would like it and I was right. He happily geeked his way through the museum. It's got loads of cool things--whole planes, missiles, bits of spaceships... :) Also, the highlights of the American history museum which is being renovated (bah). They collect all sorts of things--from George Washington's uniform to Einstein's pipe to the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz to the Puffy Shirt from Seinfeld. Sadly they have not moved Julia Child's entire kitchen--oh well ;) (But they did have one of her handwritten recipes.)

Aliza is a fussy madam and insists on being carried as much as possible. Naturally I didn't get my size 8 wrap before we left and I didn't bring my size 7 with me to DC because I haven't quite got the hang of it (not helped by my mother making fun of me. I think I'll let HER carry the baby around a museum for a couple of hours. I think Neil's coming round to the carrier idea too if he can find one that isn't too girly!)

The state of the Mall is really bad--all the grass is brown and patchy and it's only June. It should be our nation's showplace (the Mall is the park with the Capitol at one end and the Washington Monument at the other). I was embarrassed as an American. I have to find out who's in charge (National Parks Service?) and write to them. Probably my representative and Senators as well (if it's the NPS they'll say they don't have the money).

Afterwards we were hot and tired, so we stopped at the Apple Store in Pentagon City (only 2 stops away :) ) and got a new iTrip as I discovered on the way down that my old iTrip isn't compatible with my new iPod. Bah. Now we've come back to the hotel to rest for a minute and find somewhere to eat. :) We'll do the monuments either before or after depending on level of hunger/heat. (Meh, I wans't expecting this level of heat yet. Global warming, someone call the Independent!)

Tomorrow I think we shall do the zoo in the morning (I'm a sucker for pandas). In the afternoon we're heading to Silver Spring and then home!

Later, since LJ didn't want to post:
We went and had a very nice dinner. Let's put it this way: Normally, I'm not keen on spinach in general and I think that creamed spinach looks and tastes like something I'd use as garden mulch. But the lamb I ordered came with the most delicious garlic creamed spinach. I ate every bite. The rest wasn't bad either especially the chocolate tart (hot, rich, dark gooey chocolate filling, accompanied by a light chocolate ice cream--absolutely perfect, vanilla wouldn't have done--and a caramelised banana).

Afterwards we went to the Lincoln Memorial (which also has a great view of the reflecting pool, the Washington Monument and the Capitol--they're all lined up). And then back to the hotel. Let's see if LJ lets me post this now :-)
