Ooh, that was a bit frustrating! If the writers hadn't said they would be wrapping it up and explaining it I think it would be easier to swallow. As it stands, you can eliminate some possibilities, but it's still equally weighted between 2, as I see it. There's definitely one reality and one in his mind; but which is which? (I can get over all his references to the future being correct--that could just be called a necessary plot hole to maintain ambiguity. And in some cases, as with things involving characters, his imagination would invent their futures and he would fulfill them. So that aspect wouldn't be a problem.)
On the other hand, I did develop a worrying fondness for Gene Hunt and his camel coat. For some reason, when it comes to TV (this definitely isn't true in real life) I have a thing for assholes, though usually they're really clever assholes (House is a perfect example. Why I find Hugh Laurie suddenly attractive when he has stubble, an American accent and an attitude problem is a mystery.)
ETA: Judging from what everyone else says, and an interview with the writer in the Manchester Evening News that someone linked to, it does seem like the wake-up was real. I wasn't sure if it was just part of his coma, and he was turning away from waking up and back into his dream world, or if the whole bizarre alternative outlined in the last episode was real after all. I think I was expecting something less straightforward so I went looking for it.
