Today the Associated Press described Wallsend (in Tyneside) as "north of London".

Indeed, it is north of London, but so is most of the damn country! "Near Newcastle" would have been far more descriptive, and anyone who didn't know where Newcastle is could look it up. Or even "near Newcastle, in the north of England". But describing Tyneside as "north of London" just makes Americans look dumb.
