This week it's been the Virgin All-Time Top 500. I never agree with these lists. That's to be expected. But every time, I still go "how could people vote this way??" I can understand when it's a matter of opinion--I think "With Or Without You" is U2's best single, but I appear to be in a minority. But "Beautiful Day" outranking it? I can see "One" or "Pride", but not that. And how can "Hey Jude" be #11, but "Eleanor Rigby" at #157? Again, you might disagree on exactly what is the best Beatles song, but "Hey Jude" is just annoying--and "Yellow", which preceded it, is definitely not Coldplay's best.
Then, of course, we have the maddening ones, where the songs are just not that good. The top 2 for this are "Angels" (not a bad song but vastly overrated) and "Imagine" which is just crap. I'm sorry, I know it comes in at the top of all these charts, but it's a bad song. It sounds all right at first; the piano is nice. But after a few listens, you realise that the lyrics aren't poetic genius; they're just trite.
I can even disagree with songs I like: "Mr. Brightside" at #10. It's a good song, but not top 10 of all time! In a couple of years it will be much lower, though.
Ah, the #1 was this year's hit, "Chasing Cars". Pah.
