According to the Guardian, 13 NHS trusts are effectively bankrupt. They don't name them all, but looking at the table, Barnet and Chase Farm probably squeak by--their cumulative debt is "only" 14.5% of turnover. (This frightens me--if we're facing such big cuts and we're not even the worst off, I don't want to know what's going on at the worst ones.) However, 2 of the bankrupt trusts are North West London Hospitals and West Hertfordshire Hospitals. That would be Northwick Park and Watford, respectively. So the situation in my area is not good. I knew West Herts was in trouble; they closed the birth centre in Hemel Hempstead and there have been other cuts there.
Meanwhile, the government wants the NHS to run a £250M surplus next year and Tony Blair calls it the pride of Britain!
I'm not bitter, honestly I'm not. Just because I'm considered high risk enough not to have any choices, but too low risk to actually get any attention from the consultants. I've had exactly 4 appointments my entire pregnancy (Monday will be my 5th), was booked in too late (despite getting referred at 6 weeks) to have screening tests performed, have never seen the same person twice, no assigned midwife as point of contact, no help, nothing.
