I had my 33 week visit today. There was a brief scare when the consultant couldn't hear the heartbeat with the Doppler, but he wheeled in the portable ultrasound--all is well. The contrary little sod is still frank breech. I'm not particularly worried about it as 10 or 15% of babies (can't remember exactly) are still arse-down at 33 weeks. If it's still upright at my 36 week scan, then I'll worry. Well, not really, as it's quite simple: breech baby, I have a section. It's theoretically possible that they might allow a trial of labour (some hospitals do) but I'm not going to bother for 2 reasons: One, a major randomised US study found that Caesarean birth is safer by a large margin, and two, the increased use of sections means that there are few doctors and midwives who are even capable of a breech delivery now. I'm not having some registrar poking around only to end up with a C-section anyway.
I got order slips for a GTT (doctor needed convincing that phlebotomy simply would not do the test without the correct paperwork!) and a TFT check at 36 weeks. By the time I was done at antenatal, it was past 16:30, so I'll have to ring about the GTT tomorrow.
BP was 142/90, so stable, but I couldn't manage a sample. Between that and the difficulty of assessing the baby's growth (I wanted to say, "It's OK, you can come out and say it, there's too much fat in the way") I need to have a weekly BP and urine check. Bah.
Speaking of which, he said "have your midwife do a weekly BP/urine check". well, I don't really HAVE a midwife as I've been under consultant care from my booking-in. So I assumed I'd just ask at the desk. Well, er, no midwife appointments available till 6th January! Great system. I was told to ring my GP surgery. Actually, that will be more convenient, but I have a pessimistic suspicion that I will have to explain myself at least 3 times.
Next visit and scan at 36 weeks (18th Dec).
