Steve (nogs) pointed me to Data Rescue II which easily and quickly got the data off my drive. Now I'll have to risk erasing and reformatting it to use it again for a while--I can't afford to replace it just yet.

Other than that the new laptop is just dandy. Screen is brighter and crisper, processor is speedy, and the new MagSafe power adapter is cool. (Brilliant for me, you know how I am with adapter pins!) Only problem is that this is a big room with a shortage of power points. Makes things fun....
