I'm just not feeling in the R"H spirit this year. I cooked, I ate the symbolic foods, I wished people Shana-Tova... but that's it. I missed services this morning (slept in); and now I'm feeling rather lonely and out of it. The holidays just don't work right without the communal spirit.

I made pineapple ice cream. It's lovely :) Touch too much vanilla; I should have used only half a pod. Rich as hell (heck it has 5 egg yolks and nearly 500ml double cream in it--thinking about it I should have used whipping as the recipe calls for US heavy, which is 36% instead of 48%. Or used more milk. Still tasty stuff though ;) )

The Le Glacier is a bit of a pain to use; the top doesn't lock into the base very easily. Funnily enough my mother has a Krups La Glaciere, which I think is basically the same model (Magimix doesn't sell in the USA), and I don't remember having nearly so much trouble. Also, the feed tube is too narrow, so unless you use a funnel or pour the mixture into a jug, you get a mess. Still, for £40, you can't complain much! It's well worth it if you like ice cream.

Speaking of Magimix, they have replaced the 5100 that I have with the 5200, which now comes with an XL feed tube that will actually hold whole potatoes! Dang. Not that I have the remotest intention of replacing mine but it is a nice feature.

The manual for our fridge-freezer (Miele KFN8462 SD, if you'd like to read the whole thing) is unintentionally very funny. It contains such gems as:

"This appliance is not a toy! [gumph about kids] Supervise its use by the elderly or infirm."
"Do not store explosive materials in this appliance"
"Any damage which may be caused by cockroaches or other vermin will not be covered by the guarantee."
"Unsuitable packing material: ... Bin bags ... "

And my favourite, the table of normal noises made by the appliance. This includes:
"Brrr..."
"Blubb, blubb..."
"Click..."
"Sssrrr..."
With explanations. I swear, it's there, page 35 of the manual.

And they say Germans have no sense of humour!
