My appointment was at 10:15. I left plenty of time, and got there a few minutes early (would have been earlier if not for unexpected random bus stop). I go to the antenatal clinic, check in, and am told to fill in a history questionnaire. I do so.
At 10:30, the midwife comes out. I am ordered to pee in a vial. I do so. Then I go into the consulting room. I answer various questions, she comments on all the research I did (GP mentioned it in his referral letter) and says "ah, typical American". I bite my tongue. Oh, and because Barnet left me so long, I can't have the screening tests for spina bifida and Down's--they won't do them after 20 weeks.
She tests my urine. No sugar, but there is protein. Uh oh.
Baby's heartbeat is checked. Nice and strong. Yay!
She tests my blood pressure. 140/95. Uh oh.
Then she goes on to do my blood tests. She doesn't like the look of my veins and decides to send me down to phlebotomy. Afterwards, I have to go to the Maternity Day Unit for a consult on my BP.
Phlebotomy is jammed. Guy at desk looks dubious about me. I say I was sent down from antenatal and I need to go back up afterwards. He grudgingly agrees to give me the free slot at 11:55 (35mins later). I wait, and finish my book. I have 3 vials of blood drawn. Back upstairs. There's a wait at MDU and I'm advised to come back in half an hour. I don't fancy hospital cafeteria food but I get a drink and the papers, and read them. Back upstairs at 12:50. BP retaken, 135/85. Nurse says she should have asked for some more tests when I was downstairs, and takes another vial of blood (other arm, and she was just fine with my veins thank you!)
I have to go back for another BP check and blood test results on Wednesday, and it looks as if I'll be shifted up to consultant care as I may now need to be monitored for pre-eclampsia.
