I went to reboot my laptop aaaaand.... question-mark folder. Root filesystem fried. I wasn't entirely surprised because this did happen before and I ran various disk repair programs. I AM annoyed as my backups are a few days old and I was going to take new ones as soon as I rebooted! I won't have lost anything really important, just a few days of e-mail, IM conversations, and so on, but still. Disk Utility can see the physical disk, but there's no filesystem on it.

So no more delaying on the laptop repair. I'll be demanding a new hard drive (as well as a new LCD). At least I can go to Brent Cross instead of Regent Street.

I'm now on Neil's PC, which I am beating into submission because he's only had it a week, and unlike me, just gets it into a state where it's half-usable and then starts having fun. I go for getting it all back on when I'm on a roll. :) (Though, to be fair, all of his stuff is on a dead PC and he has to work out some way of getting it back.)

So I figured Brent Cross wouldn't be busy, and if I just turned up--no problem!

Ha bloody ha. Got there at 10:20. Next slot--16:00. Can't do it, driving lesson this afternoon. Asked salesdroid if he could squeeze me in--after all, he's just going to enter the details and send it off. Nope!

Now I have to go back. This is more of a pain than it sounds. If I could drive to Brent Cross, no problem! But busing it is another story, and carrying my laptop bag made my abdominal muscles/ligaments hurt. Yes, I am as puzzled as you are. I have never considered carrying my laptop to be a particular pain. It is a large one, so it's awkward to carry around regularly, but that's it. So I really need Neil to drive me--I hope I can get one of the later appointments tomorrow :(

Meanwhile, I can't get sound to work correctly on Neil's PC. The speakers are on, the volume settings are fine, and if I run the speaker test, it works. But if I try to play a sound file, nothing. ?!

ETA: Fixed. Stupid Windows was trying to output through the wrong device!
