I broke my streak of actually treating the Sabbath as a day of rest, and went into town. (I blame it on not being able to go anywhere all week due to heat.) Since the Northern Line is shut AGAIN (East Finchley to Camden, and you'd have to be insane to take a rail replacement bus) I got a 125 to Southgate. This worked quite well, although as usual London bus timetables are marvellous works of fiction. TfL reckoned it should take 11 minutes to get from North Finchley Sainsburys to Southgate station. I knew straight away that was a lie. It would take me 11 minutes to drive there. Sure enough it took 20, and there wasn't traffic either. Do the timings not include time for stopping?

2 problems with the Piccadilly Line: One, it was full of Arsenal supporters. (At least they all got off at Arsenal.) Two, it is probably the most popular line with tourists, and we're getting into peak tourist time. The trains were packed with them. I'm not anti-tourist but I do wish they would remember some obvious things, like moving down the platform. There are doors all the way down the train! (And the clumping makes it very difficult for others to get down the platform either.)

Borders lost my custom thanks to having non-functioning air conditioning. It's not that hot today--the high was 27 according to the BBC. But I appear to overheat at the drop of a hat. I caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror and my face was bright red.

Foyles, sadly, did not have anything by Amartya Sen. I'm not sure a pregnant brain and international development economics really go together, but he's someone I've meant to read for a while. Might have to order from Amazon.

I also had an ice-cream. :)
