Yesterday's 10 Best:
"Best Computer Mouses"

*screams*
It's true that out of context, grammatically-irregular plurals often become regular, but that's usually as part of a phrase. In this case, the word's just acquired a new meaning, and the plural remains "mice".

And another one, we'll keep it at one post:

I picked up a copy of the Jewish News, dated 11.05.06. Inside was an ad for a lecture at Ner Yisrael. At the bottom it said "Please purchase tickets by 10.05.06".

Let's hope they really meant it to be in last week's issue, but the advertising department messed up...

(It looked like a pretty good lecture actually, it included Rabbi Natan Slifkin, but it's £25 :( )

ETA: http://alt-usage-english.org/excerpts/fxmouses.html says "Mouses is preferred" and cites the MS Technical Style Manual in support of avoiding "mice" (but MS recommend "mouse devices" which sounds a bit redundant), but goes on to say "Mice is in common usage". I dislike their reasoning though: "Mice is just too suggestive of little furry creatures". Well, that's what you get for calling it a mouse in the first place!!

We've had some lovely warm sunny weather lately, and my neighbourhood is actually looking nice. It must be admitted that our High Road is uninspiring at the best of times (as commented on in London for Londoners) but as you go west into Woodside Park it improves. This time of year it's lovely--green and quiet. The Evening Standard had a feature on East Finchley a few weeks back; apparently, it's now the in place for everyone who's priced out of Muswell Hill. One estate agent commented that people who live in East Finchley would never live in the rest of Finchley and vice-versa--and it's true. Clone town high street versus small shops or not, I actually like the quiet here.

Several houses on our road have big lilac bushes in front, and you can smell them as you walk towards the station. It's nice. And yesterday was clear enough that I could see Mill Hill Observatory from the train. You actually get a pretty good view from the Northern Line if it's clear.

We're connected at 8128kbps and have been for the past few days, no drops. I'd heard that BT cap your speed initially, so I wasn't expecting any huge improvements. I just did a speed test for the hell of it--420kbps down, 370 up. That's actually very good for this time of day--ever since our exchange went ADSL Max, it's been at a crawl in the evenings. We're talking 200k. If it keeps up I'll write a pro forma complaint to BT--not that I expect a result since it's home ADSL, 50:1 contention, no guarantees. I think hitting under 200k on an 8Mbit line is pretty poor, though.

I'll have to remember to test it late at night when no one's on...

ETA: Just realized, I multiplied by 10 in my head... 420kbps is better than it was, but it's still crap!! that said, the upstream is good so it does seem they've removed the cap. On 2Mb, we had 256k up; on 8Mbit it's 400k.
