the saga )

So right now I'm in Starbucks... ugh! Although I found an open network so I don't have to pay T-Mobile ;)

Expect a spate of (backdated) edits in the next hour or so... (Still had the laptop so I could still type!)

The DSL light on the modem keeps taunting us by coming on for 5 seconds, then flashing off again. *cries* No news from BT. I've reminded Neil to ask BT to refund £1 from our bill for every day we're without broadband ;)

We have hundreds of channels on Sky and yet we're unable to find anything to watch. We've been reduced to the music channels--currently, it's "100 Greatest Indie Floor Fillers" on VH2. (How is The Strokes' "Last Night" ranked 3 above Pulp's "Common People"? C'mon!) We could watch a DVD but that would mean agreeing on one.... (And most of the Region 2 discs, which are all we can watch in the living room, are Neil's.)

(Number 1 is the Kaiser Chiefs, "I Predict a Riot". I think not! And VH1 has claimed that Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" is the greatest one hit wonder of the '80s. I disagree. Among other things, didn't Berlin have another popular-ish single, which would automatically disqualify them?)

For goodness' sake... last night Neil rang BT as they'd said they'd call back and they didn't. They had no record of him calling before!!! Idiots. Unfortunately it seems it's a line problem (duh, we knew that), so no matter what ISP we used (except for the 2 LLU ones that run their own kit), BT would have to fix it.

Today is my sister's 24th birthday: must remember to call. (She's 24?! INCONCEIVABLE!) We might go out for a drive... it's not very nice out but it's something to do. Without the Internet, what am I supposed to do while Neil watches football on TV? ;)

In the meantime I've just had a big plateful of French toast made with leftover challah. We've always got quite a bit leftover on Sunday (to anyone asking "why don't you buy less?" the answer is "you can't, it comes by the loaf".) The challah here is a bit drier and less eggy (it's a very pale yellow) than I'm used to, but it makes good French toast.

Oh, totally irrelevant but funny: I was asleep the other morning. I'd managed to sleep through the radio-alarm coming on. Then a-ha's "Take on Me" came on and I jolted awake--I thought it was my phone at first until it got past the point where my ringtone ends. :) (Then they played "Shiny Happy People". That's like the 3rd time Virgin has played that song recently. It gets irritating very quickly. Any potentially irritating song that becomes very irritating through overplay retains the ability to return to irritating very quickly when played more than a few times. :) )

I dragged Neil out for a drive. Unfortunately it was wet. And we didn't know what to do or where to go. (How did people decide these things in the pre-Internet days? ;) )We ended up on a tour of southern Hertfordshire. Not very exciting. Though we did drive through Hemel Hempstead... ;) (Neil hates Hemel) I saw the Magic Roundabout. Woo.

I came home to a message from my mother and phoned up. She's pleased that I'm coming the last weekend in May instead of the 3rd; works better for her. And I'll be able to see the new house. They're not moving till their lease is up in June, but they should have closed by then (the owner is desperate). My dad's going to Frankfurt on business around the time I leave, so if our trips coincide, he'll try to fly back via London.

You come online for a bit, and you know there's no way you'll be able to catch up with 4 days of LJ, forum posts, etc, and so you don't even try. But then you do what you usefully can, and you realise it's only been 20 minutes, and it hardly seems worth dragging your laptop out for that...
