I went for my contact lens fitting today.

The optometrist told me very sternly that my eyes are starved of oxygen--I've been wearing my contacts for too many hours for too many years. (I've had contacts since I was 13 and worn them nearly constantly for 10--and went to extended wear several years ago. You can imagine the results. :/ I know it's bad to wear them so much, but my eyes suck and I hate glasses (and I see better with contacts).

So now I need special silicon hydrogel lenses--and worse, I'm at the strongest prescription they do in these lenses (actually, the strongest they do is a quarter diopter less for myopia than my glasses prescription--but the optometrist said it would be fine). If my eyes get any worse I am totally, utterly fucked. I will have to go to rigid gas permeables, which traditionally offer the best oxygen levels (silicon hydrogel is close though) and they are fucking expensive and less comfortable. But they're available in a wider range of prescriptions. Although, they last longer as they don't collect deposits, so it's more of a one-off cost rather than constantly buying new lenses. (Though a Google for information on RGPs says that there's a new hybrid lens being marketed this year which should be more comfortable.)

What I desperately need is LASIK but I can't have it, damn it!
