Barnet council have turned down an application for a Tesco Express in Ballards Lane. Wow, our useless infighting Tory council have done something useful!! (Barnet council really are crap; it's come out that we've got the 3rd lowest per capita spending on youth in the country. And then they complain about yobs and kids hanging in the streets.)
(It really was a bit much; it was about half a mile from the Tesco in, er, Ballards Lane. There are plenty of shops in the area. While being able to get reliable milk on a Sunday evening is tempting, there is a Budgens nearby and I can risk their milk.)
In other local news, Barnet council have approved an eruv for Edgware, which I'm pleased about even though I won't use it. The fight over the Hendon & Golders Green eruv was absolutely disgusting and I was deeply ashamed that there were Jews at the forefront of the opposition. No one was making them use it or believe in it, but they acted as if a few poles were a major violation of their rights. Also, the organization is being headed by the Adath Yisrael which should hopefully mean less controversy than the 1st eruv, which is organized by the United Synagogue. Naturally, this meant that the Adath, GGBH, etc all opposed it because of our ridiculous communal politics. (Supposedly, Kedassia threatened to revoke the kashrut licences of people who used the eruv, even if their rabbis permitted its use.)
