Quite a few of the British reviews of March of the Penguins have commented on the "overly sentimental" narration and said, more or less, "trust the Yanks to tack that on".

What they don't appear to know is that the original French narration had actors as the "voices" of the penguins, and by all accounts was even more sentimental and anthropomorphised than the American one!

But of course, it was the Americans who had to tack on a sentimental narration; could never have been the French....

(i'm sick of using the shopping tag now... ;) )

I didn't get out as early as I planned, which had two consequences, one good and one bad.

Good: I was home when Parcelfarce showed up. Good job, because if they showed up that time tomorrow we wouldn't be in, and I don't know when we'd get to the depot.

Bad: Traffic was crazy, and I was using the bus.

I managed to get to Golders Green, buy a new menorah (decent, but not sterling silver; still, looks nice), candles, chicken thighs for tomorrow and some to cook for sandwiches, challah rolls for sandwiches Friday, 2 jam doughnuts (damn you Carmelli's), and the papers. At which point I was too laden down, so I went home to drop my stuff off. It took an hour. :/

Anyway, dropped it off, went to supermarket, got more stuff, went home. I shall be lazy and indulgent and have PANCAKES for dinner. With butter and syrup and a big mug of cocoa. Nyah nyah.

Have also made crème caramel. Which I don't need to have but, hey, erm. It's nice. It's what happens when you have new ramekins and extra single cream in the fridge.

Still need to get the CD and Armagnac and wrapping paper and ribbon. But we're going to see King Kong at the Leicester Square Odeon tomorrow so I can pick up the Armagnac then (going to get it from Vintage House in Old Compton Street).

I do not have crème caramel. I WOULD, if I'd watched the timing better; instead I have curdled egg in caramel sauce. Shame; I could tell that if I'd paid attention it would've been perfect.

I do, however, have yummy American pancakes, a mug of cocoa and a separate dish of syrup. I like to dip the pancakes in the syrup so they don't get sodden. I'm very perfectionist about these things. The syrup must be 100% maple, preferably Grade B (Grade A Dark Amber will do, but B is darker and richer. I recommend Shady Maple Farms, even though it is both Canadian and organic; it's the best reasonably-available brand I've found) and slightly warmed.

And now for the diabetic's dream (or nightmare): Take one pancake, fresh from the pan. Slather with Nutella. Fold in half. Eat. The Nutella will melt and leak out the other end; it's indescribably delicious. Of course, maple syrup isn't very good for the blood sugar either but Nutella feels more indulgent.
