[livejournal.com profile] mommyathome's question reminded me, this is a super-useful website:

The Cook's Thesaurus

(A couple of bits, like apple varieties, are a little US-centric, but it's mostly really good and tells you all the alternate names, etc.)

Today Neil and I went to Brent Cross (yes, we're insane).

After going to M&S (I got a scarf & gloves, Neil got 2 jumpers) Neil decided he really, really wanted a 2nd TV for the bedroom. He'd been saying this for ages, but we'd never gotten one because we'd need an LCD (a CRT of any decent size wouldn't fit). So we headed over to John Lewis (I like their service and they don't push evil overpriced Coverplans on you like some stores) and found a rather decent 20" Samsung. Naturally, we'd have preferred the Sonys at twice the price (higher res, HD ready, iDTV) but it was a good size, clear enough and fine for what we needed--after standing back and watching the various sets we decided that the smaller ones would just not work. (We've got a 28" Sony flat CRT in the living room.)

Now we just need to find the Freeview box: we think it's in storage.

I really, really want Simpsons DVD sets on BOGOF buuuuutt... hmph.

tonight's dinner: chicken and vegetable stir fry with noodles.
Why is it that I either put too little seasoning in my stir fries or too much? I think I don't have the hang of Asian food...

Later I made sautéed apples (based on a Jane Grigson recipe, but with more sugar, so there was nice gooey caramel coating the apples). Super easy too. :-) (Peel and core tart eating apples [1 per person] into wedges; sauté in clarified butter; sprinkle sugar over; cook till apples are tender and caramel is rich and brown. Remove apples with slotted spoon and sprinkle a little cinnamon over them if you want. Add a little cream to the pan, stir to make a sauce, and pour over the apples.)
