Last night, I was suddenly possessed with the desire to assemble the IKEA DVD tower that's been sitting in a box in our hallway for months. So I got it out and did it. (Then realized I needed to use a hammer for the back, and it was 2am. So I didn't totally finish it.)
Tonight after dinner, Neil and I set about setting it up and moving all the DVDs off the bookcase onto it. (A DVD tower is a much more efficient use of space, since the shelves are much more tightly packed. It's also shallower, which is irrelevant right now as we've got them on either side of the bookcase, but could be useful in future.)
This allowed me to rearrange the bookcase. I had books stacked on it and more next to the sofa. However, this posed some problems. One shelf (we decided to move this to the bottom, as it allows the most flexibility for the remaining shelves) is Neil's Whisky Shrine. This requires more height than is normal. In addition, I have some tall books (12" I believe). We decided to use the middle shelf (which is fixed) for them. It looks slightly odd, but is probably best (the top would also work, since the 3 top shelves would be dividing up the same amount of space, but I'm not sure about having the largest, heaviest books on the top shelf.)
This results in some problems. The other 4, unfixed shelves, have less height than is normal, and the middle shelf is the ONLY one which will fit large books. However, it's now full and I know I'll be buying more books that size.
The end result can be seen here..
As it happens, I have another 60cm Billy bookcase (half height though) waiting to be assembled. The problem is that it will not be assembled until Neil gets rid of the desk clogging up my side of the bedroom. Knowing the speed at which we do things, we might move first.
HAHAHAHA!
And yes: all the books in that bookcase are mine and almost all of them have been purchased since I moved here. I have a serious book addiction. It is lifelong and incurable. It's partly an addiction to the printed word--if I don't have a book handy I'll read whatever is. Leaflets, ads, cornflake packets, you name it. I used to hide my book under the edge of my desk in school and read instead of paying attention. Or I'd just read other parts of the textbook (this worked best in English). But it's also about books. I love holding them, I love reading them, I love owning them. The library is good, but it doesn't satisfy. They're not mine to do with as I please, to be read again and again.
