France has voted No to the EU constitution.
I'm not convinced that this is a bad thing, though it wasn't necessarily done for the right reasons--it was not an attempt to foist Anglo-American liberalism on France. But it was a poor campaign and a poor constitution. The "Oui" side should have seen the warning signs. Instead, they did nothing to improve the image of the EU and its bureaucrats. They simply said "oh, vote yes, this is vital to Europe. Don't worry your pretty heads about what it contains".
(Of course, a touch of Anglo-American liberalism would do France some good. Its current overprotected system has resulted in a two-tier market: the privileged with the benefits and protections, and the rest on short term contracts designed to evade restrictions. Or worse, unemployed.)
