This morning I went to the doctor's. My regular GP was off, so I saw a different one, who's new to the practice. She was great. The birth control I was on in the States isn't available here as far as I know, but she rang the senior partner to ask her, and said she'd e-mail some group whose name I forget (Marie something, no not Stopes I think) and see if they knew when it's coming to the UK (it's supposed to be; you can get it in Ireland). She also didn't give me any trouble about the contraceptive I did want. :-) The computer flagged up an interaction with metformin, but her reference didn't have anything, so she gave it to me--she agreed that she couldn't think of a reason why it would be a problem with this contraceptive and not others using the same hormones (including the ones I've been on!)

So, off to Boots, drop off my scripts (crap, forgot to go get them...) and went into Golders Green. I queued up at the bakery to get Neil bagels for tomorrow night. (I'm far too nice. But I did it because the only places to get decent bagels around here are the kosher bakeries, and they'll be closed tomorrow.) Also picked up some smoked salmon and a boiling chicken because I want soup.

This afternoon I went to Borough Market. I'm glad I did--I found parsley root, which is essential (as far as I'm concerned) for chicken soup, and it's really hard to find here! I was lucky to spot it. At first I thought it was another basket of parsnips--then I thought "why would they have two lots of parsnips??" and looked again. Sure enough, it was parsley root, just fatter than I was used to, and without the tops so they were hard to recognize. So, soup Sunday!! I'll have to go back to the butcher so I can get more schmaltz for the knaidlach. Mmmm, schmaltz!

(Edit: Since two people have asked--schmaltz is chicken fat, aka Jewish lard :-) [as well as cloying sentiment])
