Why can't I curl up in bed to read without getting sleepy and dozing off? Not fair. It's such a lovely comfy way to read, but I didn't want to fall asleep at 22:00... then wake up an hour and a half later when Neil came to bed. :-(

Tomorrow I'm making what we were supposed to have tonight: Wienerschnitzel and risotto. (I can never think of a good vegetable to go with this. Need to find one.) I'm going to go to the butcher's tomorrow to get meat for Thursday's. Since the cooking week has now been shrunk, I have to choose one of the planned meals for this week. (We won't be home for dinner Friday, and Neil has his bridge club party Saturday.) So:

[Poll #399310]
(I have the quinces, but they keep 2 weeks. So I could do it another day.)

(ooh, Neil voted for the tagine. I'm a bit surprised!)

I've lost over a stone since coming to England. I'm finally starting to believe I'm losing weight. Yesterday I put on a skirt I hadn't worn in ages, and I could pull it off without unbuttoning it! (Wool crepe, no elastic in the waistband.) It is a size bigger than my (now-old) usual (I can't remember now why I have one skirt that's bigger, in a brand I bought a lot), but even so, that means my regulars are too big too, like I was starting to think they were.

I'm not on a diet. Not exactly. My diet consists of the following elements:

1) I used to live in a house where there was always something to eat. Now I don't. We never have leftovers in the fridge, for example.

2) I live in a flat with a tiny kitchen and no dishwasher. This reduces the temptation to whip things up.

3) I lived in New York for 27 years. This meant I knew where to buy everything edible, both healthy and not. Here I don't, and not all English things are to my taste (bakery things in particular).

The Chip Shop in Park Slope (home of the infamous deep-fried Twinkie) has now started doing deep-fried Atkins diet bars. :-)

Why doesn't Tesco's online store locator give store hours?? I know that Finchley Central Tesco opens earlier than any other local supermarket (Sainsbury's and Waitrose both open at 08:00) but I can't remember if it's 06:00 or 07:00. It's a shame I can't drive, Colney Hatch Tesco is 24hrs. (OK, the buses will be running soon, in theory I could walk to Tally Ho Corner and get a 134, but it's dark and cold. I can get to the other one via tube and spend less time walking. ;-) )

I'm staaaaarving and everything to eat in this flat requires cooking. Which is not really possible. I can't even have cornflakes: I finished the milk yesterday. And we're out of clean cereal bowls. I don't know how Neil will have his Weetabix today!

First, the plumber just rang. He's having van trouble and can't come this afternoon. No dinner tonight either :( (I hope that veal will still be edible tomorrow!!)

Second, three weeks ago I slipped in Tottenham Court Road station, fell down a flight of stairs, and wrenched my knee. It still hurts like hell if I try to straighten it all the way, and I'm limping slightly. I've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow anyway (new patient induction) so I'll ask the nurse if there's anything i can do. It's not serious, just a lingering sprain, but it's annoying.

Oh, I did go to Tesco at 7am. The problem was that there isn't a lot you can get for breakfast that involves not dirtying any dishes. Their Finest strawberry yoghurt is nice though (but I'd prefer it without the big pieces of strawberry). Zoe was very happy with the yoghurt too. :-)

First, the plumber. Then the doctor's surgery called and cancelled my appointment tomorrow (nurse is out sick). Then Neil called and asked if we could cancel dinner plans so he could go to the pub. I was feeling lazy anyway so my "sure" came easily. :-)

Hopefully the plumber will come fairly early tomorrow (he's supposed to come in the morning) so I can actually leave the flat, which I haven't really done since Monday!!!
