I watched Ae Fond Kiss on the plane coming home, and it really hit home in some ways. To me, both points of view were wrong, and too extreme. We can't sacrifice our happiness for family and values, but the modern Western idea of "love conquers all" doesn't work either. Family and community ties do matter. By marrying out, I have separated myself from the community, and it hurts. I'm lucky--I'm not completely rejected for my choices, unlike in some more traditional communities. But I'm still separate, and I do feel it.
