Did the grocery shopping, not much else. Carly came home. She liked the earrings I got her as a graduation/birthday present. :-) I wasn't sure how much she liked purple but it's her favorite color. D'oh for not knowing that!
Totally different note: In the supermarket today I saw "cookies" that claimed to be wheat-, sugar-, gluten-, lactose-, and cholesterol-free. I wonder if they tasted of anything? Sometimes the whole low-carb craze drives me mad--it's like the low-fat thing 10 years ago. After seeing enough diet crazes, I'm permanently cynical about diet food products. Somehow I'm not sure all the stuff they're putting in low-carb products is all that good for you. I was somewhat pleased to have my suspicions echoed by the current Consumer Reports, which said that a lot of the claims on low-carb labels are scientifically dubious, particularly "net carb" claims. They don't know how the replacement starches and sugars affect the blood when used in such large amounts, and the FDA doesn't even have criteria for "net carbs", so it's a free for all. And, of course, the low carb products still have calories (Atkins ice cream, for example, has 280 calories per serving, just as bad as Haagen-Dazs) so if you eat enough of it you'll gain weight.
And the Coke annoyance: Last week I saw that they'd introduced 1.5L bottles. I didn't pay much attention and bought 2L bottles as usual. This week they ONLY had 1.5L bottles. The 2L bottles were permanently on sale for $0.89 (plus tax and deposit). (There was a regular price on the shelf, but it seemed like there was always a sale sign up. I think the regular was $1.29.) The 1.5L bottles (in addition to requiring that I buy more, and probably having a higher ratio of packaging to product) were on sale for $0.99. So I figured I'd go elsewhere, which I did. They still had some 2L bottles, but they were far outnumbered by the 1.5L bottles (which makes me wonder if the bigger ones are being phased out). The 2L were $1.39, the 1.5L $1.19. Price per liter: $0.70 and $0.75 respectively. Grrr. Excuse for price-hike. (Yes, I could have saved money by buying the 1.5L bottles at $0.99, but it wasn't just about the price; it was about my preference for the big bottles. The price was just an extra kick.)
Minor happiness: Haagen-Dazs was on sale for $1.99 a pint. This is v.v.good as ice cream prices are expected to rise this summer (all the ingredients have skyrocketed in price--e.g. milk is up to almost $4/gal as Canadian imports are blocked due to BSE).
