yesterday was fun... not!
I had a gynecologist's appointment at 16:45. I got there at 16:35. At 17:15, my name was called and I got shown to an exam room. The nurse did my weight and blood pressure (150/90?!!! I've never had a BP reading over 130/90, and it's normally more like 120/80. Even she agreed something must be wrong--she was going to take it again later, but I guess she forgot). Then I got to wait. I was glad I'd brought a book, because the doc didn't get there till 18:00. Grr. I know it's not intentional, and it's an OB/GYN practice and they get a lot of last minute and emergency appointments, but it's still annoying to wait over an hour for a 10 minute exam.
After that I went shopping. The stores were a mess. I hit good sales at Lord & Taylor, though. Retail must be hurting, to have such big sales at Christmas. I got 2 sweaters and a long-sleeved T-shirt for $95 :-) mmm, 50% off! Did some Christmas shopping, and then I hit the mall. Finally got the black tights I hadn't been able to find last week, but shoes... well... let's put it this way: When it comes to clothes, I can find loads of things I like, but none of them will fit me. When it comes to footwear, it's the other way round. Fit is rarely a problem, but I'm picky as hell. First of all, I'm the Queen of Sensible Shoes. My sisters (fashion slaves) laugh at me because I refuse to wear high heels or platforms. (I'll wear heels if social etiquette requires, but I put them on at the last possible minute and take them off as soon as possible.) I like shoes I can walk in and that don't give me calluses, blisters, or bunions. There was an article in the New York Times last week about women having bunion surgery just so they can keep wearing heels--crazy!
What I want are boots. Nice high black leather boots. But there are two problems. First, most of them have high heels. Secondly, it appears that I have impossibly shaped calves. Either they fit at the ankle and are too small for the tops of my calves (the majority) or they fit the top of my calves and are too big in the ankle. There were a few with elastic inserts at the top (presumably to accommodate a slightly wider range of calf sizes) but no help.
I'm not sure what kind of shoes I do want, though. I mainly wear long skirts, and boots would look really good. Right now, I have black slip-on flats and black Oxfords (totally unstylish, but fantastically comfortable). Both are nearing the end of their useful lifespan. I'd actually really like another pair of the Oxfords but I didn't see them. :-(
Got fed up by 9pm, went home with a headache, and went to bed.
