Last night, I barely roused myself for dinner. I barely managed to push down my fish and rice, then went back to bed. I missed all but the last 15 minutes of ER (despite waking up at 21:55 and thinking "have to turn the TV on in a moment".) I went back to bed afterwards and slept till 3am. Back to bed at 4, woken up at 7:00 by the dog barking at the exterminator. This wasn't entirely a bad thing--I needed to get the shopping done early so I could wait for FedEx and GE. (The reason I had to be there for the FedEx was that it contained cash. Who the fuck thinks FedExing cash is a good idea?! Whatever happened to checks, or even postal money orders??)
Got that done, got home, unpacked, realized I'd forgotten Halloween candy. Unfortunately no one else was home so I couldn't go out! Had to wait till Grandma got home at 2pm. Got the candy, dropped it at home, and went in search of decent pie apples (I"m making and freezing the Thanksgiving pies this weekend). Why is it so hard to find anything but Granny Smiths? I'll use them in a pinch, but they're not my favorites, especially since so many come from Australia and have been sitting in storage for months by now. Got a bag of Northern Spies at Whole Foods though, which are much better. Good thing I remembered they had bags of local apples. :-) (They still don't have some of the more unusual varieties you'll see if you go to an orchard, or even one of the greenmarket stalls, but pretty decent. I'm an apple freak, and I love different varieties. The 7 or 8 they sell in the supermarket just doesn't do it for me. I'm still looking for my ideal apple. The Macoun's my longterm favorite, and I still think it has the perfect texture, super crisp and juicy, and a nice sweet/tart balance. But over the past few years, my tastes have changed and I prefer a slightly stronger flavor. One year I had a fabulous apple, the Esopus Spitzenburg, but they're very, very difficult to find.)
Anyway, now home, going to have some blintzes in a bit, and attending to the occasional trick-or-treater...
