got woken up at 7:30 by Grandma making a racket downstairs. I got up (went to bed early last night :) ) Made 2 sponge layers for tiramisu. Mom, having been woken up earlier than desired, decided to start the cooking for tonight (Yom Kippur eve). She is currently plucking the chickens with tweezers: they are even worse than usual. We've both sworn to stop buying chicken at the butchers (he sells Crown Heights Badatz) and stick with Empire from the supermarket as they're plucked better. (Kosher chicken is rarely perfectly plucked as it's cold water only and done by hand, but Empire seems to be better at getting 90% of the feathers out.) Our old butcher sold Empire or Aaron's Rubashkin, definitely better! The one in Oceanside is ()@*($ Lubavitch and I can't be bothered to drive an extra 20 minutes for a different one. Now that more supermarkets sell kosher meat (aside from Empire chicken which has long been available) there are fewer butchers around :-(
