Got the mugs and a new kitchen scale (I know... lazy... but it was going to take 6 weeks for Salter to replace it). I got the 5kg model this time. There's one annoying thing about it: it measures in 5g increments instead of 1g increments. It's not that I weigh quantities that small (I use measuring spoons) but the lack of precision irritates me. What if I want to weigh all the ingredients to make sure I haven't missed something? Also, it's an Aquatronic model, which means you can use it for liquids--there's a fl.oz./mL button. Well, that's great for mL, as 1 mL water weighs 1g; but they seem to be working on the 1 fl.oz. = 1oz principle, which is not quite true. It's _almost_ true for imperial measures: 1 UK fl.oz.=28.4mL, 1oz = 28.35g. But 1 US fl.oz. = 29.5mL, and the instruction sheet will no doubt confuse Americans as it says ½ pint = 10oz. (½ US pint = 8oz = 236mL.)

Since there's no conversion, btw, it means that the feature is actually really silly, and if more people (like me ;) ) knew that 1mL water weighs 1g, they could simply weigh liquid ingredients, and not fuss with measuring jugs. It's much more accurate (most measuring jugs have a sizeable margin of error to begin with, and this is before you add human error.) This also holds for milk, cream, wine, and other water-based liquids, but not oil--they give the error factor for oil on the instruction sheet.

And yes, this is all very anal, but that's how I am about some things, particularly in the kitchen.
