I vowed that tonight I would try to go to bed at a sensible hour and sleep through the night. Unfortunately, I had a nice big bowl of pasta for dinner and dozed off for an hour and a half. :-(

In today's story on recipes from the Clintons' new book, shortening is translated as lard. This is incorrect. When an American recipe says shortening, it does not usually mean lard but hydrogenated vegetable shortening (popularly known by its brand name, Crisco). The British equivalent would be Trex, although butter would be a tastier alternative.

In addition, some confusion appears to have arisen with the temperatures: the numbers seem to be for Fahrenheit, but you have labelled them as Celsius. Perhaps British ovens are different, but I do not think my oven is capable of reaching a temperature of 350C (662F).

Sincerely,
Alexis Rosoff
