TV

For as long as we've had Cablevision (almost 20 years), HBO has been Channel 6. It's one of the few channels (other than the main broadcast ones) that has never had its channel position shifted.

This week, they finally moved it. It's now Channel 82, down with all the other pay channels.

Now Channel 6 is Univision. (I don't know why they decided to put it there: its broadcast channel is 41, and it's nowhere near the other Spanish channels.) I keep turning to Channel 6, expecting HBO (old habits die hard) and doing a momentary double-take as I encounter telenovelas or bad Spanish talk shows. (Spanish TV is truly dire. I used to try to watch it to improve my Spanish, but it was too awful to watch. The most popular thing on Spanish TV is telenovelas, soap operas. They're all from Mexico or South America and make American daytime TV look realistic. One of the channels [we have 4] does quite a few dubbed movies. I've watched bits of those when bored and I've become convinced of one thing--all Spanish dubbing, at least for the US market, is done by the same 5 people. Everyone sounds alike, and there doesn't seem to be any effort to match the voice-over to the original. They can't sound the same, of course, but it is strange when a teenaged character has a voice of someone who's clearly a good 15 years older.)
