Left at 7:50 to do the shopping. Even though I do it Friday morning by choice, I'm still not entirely happy with it. My preferred supermarket is 25 minutes away. I put up with the drive because (in order of importance):

  1. Its selection is miles better than anywhere else around (and I don't just mean an extra dozen flavors of Rice-a-Roni--they have great produce, cheese, health foods/organic, etc

  2. It just puts things on sale instead of using evil club cards

  3. It is not owned by a giant conglomerate, but by a family, which actually responds to what customers want.

It's also 5 minutes from my preferred bakery (the one I always went to when I lived in Huntington--I have yet to find one equally as good near me). Unfortunately, in order to get the best selection, you have to be there by 10:00 latest. So I go there first, then to the supermarket. Also, the market is at its least crowded early in the morning.

Unfortunately, getting there at that hour means I have to sit in traffic for half the trip at least one way. If I go early, I hit westbound traffic on the Northern State coming back. If I go later, I hit the northbound on the Meadowbrook going there (and sometimes a tie-up at 106/107 on the NSP too). Then there's the radio issue. I don't have a CD player in my car, so I have to listen to the radio, and morning radio is shit. Too much talk, too little music. 95.5 WPLJ compounds this problem with "Flush the Format Friday". Their normal format is a little bland but tolerable (not quite at the dentist-office level of Phil Collins and Celine Dion, but basically adult-contemporary) but the Friday format is crap, and that's on top of the overtalkative idiot DJs. This means that if 92.7 isn't playing something decent, there's nothing at all and it drives me nuts. For some reason I actually concentrate on the road better when there's some kind of background music. Hmph.

Extra added fun: I was driving down Merrick Road in the left lane. A truck came barreling down the other side and went through an enormous mud puddle at about 45mph. It went all over my car... which I'd just had washed earlier in the week!!!! I had to take it back for another wash--there was no way I could drive around for long without one. It took 5 shots of wiper fluid to get most of my windshield clean (and there was still shmootz at the edges, very gross).

On the plus side, the feared trip to Costco didn't happen. I hate Costco. It's always jammed and you have to wait 25 minutes on line. Plus, you go into this state of Costco madness where you buy stuff you don't need or can't use in such huge quantities, because OH MY GOD, IT'S SO CHEAP! Multipacks are one thing, especially when you can split them, but the industrial-sized containers of detergent that a normal person can't even lift (the companies even admit this--there are special spouts) are ridiculous. I have a theory that because of all this that unless you have a big family, you end up spending more at Costco than you would just buying stuff at the A&P as and when needed.
