Zagat came out with a NYC shopping guide. So Channel 5 News had this report on it. The store that got top marks for service was Toys in Babeland, a sex shop. They had a reporter go down and visit. The whole tone of the segment was "oh my god, a sex shop, look at this stuff! And THIS made the list...." The salesgirl was cool as a cucumber. It was hysterical. It's 2003 in New York, for chrissakes.

I'm in 2 minds of all the people who now have LJs, and loraine's comment about how she was pleased to see people "migrating" made that worse. I don't want people to migrate, or Mono to die. LJ is nice, but I don't envision it as a substitute. I like the hierarchical, subject-oriented nature of Monochrome. LJ is diffuse, centered on the users. It's like a web rather than a tree. I love the way Mono leaves so much room for individual moderators to do things with their sections. I love the sense of community that's built up. Yes, it can be cliquey and there can be backbiting, and right now the userbase is stagnating, but it would be a shame to lose so much. Why do we all come on here and moan instead of doing something? Even on Mono itself, we just moan about it dying. We don't make any effort to invigorate it. We bitch about how nothing gets done, and yes, admin can be slow, but that doesn't excuse us from taking responsibility. Any community-based effort has to work from the bottom up. If we want change we have to create it, not wait for other people to do it.
