I just downloaded a different LJ client because my old one didn't like non-ASCII characters. It accepted them, then belched at actually posting them.

Here are some test characters:

Not from a kit (which I've tried before) but the totally-from-scratch method, where you put flour and water in a container, cover it up and hope something catches. I used the grape method, where you wrap some washed grapes in cheesecloth and stick them in, giving the yeast more food. It was growing nicely, but today seemed to go down a bit (though when I looked in there, there was a nice risen spongy thing--not liquid any more--and it smelled pretty fermented. We'll see how it goes. I have no idea how it's supposed to look, to be honest, since I've never done this before! It's supposed to sit on its own till Thursday, then it gets fed.

(oh, stupid me, by the way: when I went to fix a mistake in an old entry, I discovered that the problem with extended characters was that I hadn't defined a default encoding. But I like this client better anyway, so I'm not all that bothered.)
